Hey everyone, it’s a cold and dreary outside, so I think I’ll stay inside today and talk about enterprise 2.0 again. Last week we had a look at the social sector, so this time around I’ll be looking at Student Flights, a company within the professional services sector. I’ll also be looking at how certain value levers identified by the Mckinsey Global Institute (yes, again) are shaping the effectiveness of their social media use. Go time!
Student Flights, as the name suggests, is a company that offers travel services for students on a domestic and international scale. This service is characterised by black market flights (cheap flights), adventure packages and cheap accommodation options. Essentially it’s a one-stop hub for all your travel needs. I went through them when I went with some buddies to Queenstown, New Zealand on a snow trip, good times.
Student Flights uses a Blog, Facebook and twitter page which are linked to a degree. Each blog post can be shared automatically, and the blog posts are linked together via a Facebook plugin so that comments made appear on both Facebook and the blog. The focus of each post is a destination, an activity or a deal which tends to provide a good read about a potential holiday venture, or just a simple advertisement of their latest offers. Now why is this important? This infographic makes a pretty compelling argument.
So yea, kind of a big deal.
Student Flights is leveraging their blog to great effect thanks to their audience, who can be labelled digital natives – people who were born with or during the introduction of digital technologies. The predominant value lever in this context is Marketing and Sales. In using their blog and Facebook page, they effectively strike into the home turf of their target market, and as a result, communicate more effectively. Their latest offers, deals, destinations and packages are brought to the attention of the individual in a casual and simple way.
Is Student Flight doing all they can to get the most out of this strategy? It’s hard to say, but with over 120,000 people already on their Facebook, the only way to go is up. By maximising their use of these social tools, they will undoubtedly enhance their online traffic exponentially, reach out to a greater audience and ultimately make the big bucks.
